Micro, small or medium? Two numbers decide it, and exports don't count.

Your MSME category is set by investment and turnover together, on the limits in force since April 2025. It decides whether a bank can take collateral from you, whether a guarantee can cover your loan, and whether buyers must pay you within 45 days. Put in your figures and see where you land — and which number put you there.

Where each number sits

Each bar runs across the three categories. Crossing a ceiling on either bar moves the whole business up.

What the counter does not explain

The certificate takes these numbers from your returns

Investment comes from your income-tax return and turnover from GST and income-tax data, linked through your PAN. Every GST registration under the same PAN is added together. You cannot pick a category — you can only make sure the returns behind it are right.

Up is fast, down is slow

Cross a ceiling on either number and you move up. You move down only when you are below your current category's ceiling on both numbers. That is the rule this tool applies.

Growing does not take the benefits away overnight

After an upward change, the rules let an enterprise keep the non-tax benefits of its earlier category for three years from the date of the change. A fall to a lower category applies only from the 1st of April after the year it happened.

Traders are MSMEs for borrowing only

Retail and wholesale traders can register on Udyam, but the benefit is limited to priority-sector lending. The 45-day payment protection and procurement preferences are for manufacturing and service enterprises.

Medium is an MSME, but not an MSE

Most of the protections that matter to a small borrower — no collateral up to ₹20 lakh, CGTMSE cover, the 45-day rule — are for micro and small enterprises only. A medium enterprise is inside the MSME definition and outside most of those.

How to read this. Limits are those notified by the Ministry of MSME for classification from 1 April 2025: micro up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover, small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore, the same for manufacturing and services. Exports are excluded from turnover. A figure exactly at a limit is counted within it. Your official category is the one on your Udyam certificate, worked out from your tax records; this tool shows what those records should produce. The RBI collateral rule applies to scheduled commercial banks, other than regional rural banks, for loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 April 2026. This tool is education, not advice. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and every figure is computed on your own phone.
